I am a literary scholar in Asian studies and I created this site is to share the history, literature, and culture of northeast China. My academic research focuses on the early twentieth century, in particular the period from 1931-1945, when the Japanese empire created a state called Manchukuo. In the blog, I share conference talks and short articles from my PhD research on the interactions between Chinese and Korean writers in Manchukuo. My personal interests, however, extend beyond the Manchukuo period and into the twenty-first century. Oral Examination This research looks at the various ways Chinese and Korean intellectuals interacted during the Manchukuo period. Because Manchukuo was a Japanese-created state, most previous research has focused on Japanese intellectuals, although their interactions with Chinese thinkers began to come to light in the 1980s. When it comes to Chinese writers’ interactions with their Korean counterparts in the region, most research centers on their mutual representations in fiction. My research offers some paths towards bridging these two gaps, mainly by showing that Chinese and Korean intellectuals had real interactions in person and via writing. In the course of my research, I found that these interactions resulted in distinct communities of Chinese and Korean thinkers.
